The total area of Asia, including the Caucasian isthmus and excluding the island of New Guinea, amounts to roughly one-third of the land surface of the Earth. The islands—including the Japanese islands, Taiwan, the Indonesian islands, Sakhalin and other Asian Russian islands, Sri Lanka, Cyprus, and numerous smaller islands—account for about 7 percent of the total. Asia has the highest average elevation of the continents and contains the greatest relative relief.
